How to Check if Your College Accepts CLEP/DSST: The 2026 CollegeSource Guide

Colleges are updating how they track alternative credit faster than ever before.
Are you trying to figure out whether your school accepts CLEP or DSST exams before you invest time preparing?
You're in the right place. There's a simple way to check using a free tool called Transferology, which taps into CollegeSource's massive Transfer Evaluation System (TES). In 2026, CollegeSource rolled out a new "Alternative Credit" search toggle that makes finding CLEP and DSST equivalencies easier than ever.
Here's how to use it.
What Is CollegeSource and Why Does It Matter?
CollegeSource runs one of the largest databases of college credit transfer policies in the United States. Over 1,500 colleges use their TES (Transfer Evaluation System) to track how credits transfer between institutions.
Here's the important part: Many of those same schools also use CollegeSource to track alternative credit policies. That includes CLEP exams, DSST exams, AP exams, and other standardized test options.
The public-facing version of this database is called Transferology. It's free to use. You don't need to create an account to search.

How to Check if Your College Accepts CLEP or DSST
Follow these steps to search for CLEP or DSST credit acceptance using Transferology.
Step 1: Go to Transferology.com
Open your browser and visit Transferology.com.
You'll see a simple search interface. No login required.
Step 2: Search for Your School
In the main search box, type the name of your college or university.
Select your school from the dropdown list that appears.
The system will load your school's transfer credit database.
Step 3: Use the 'Standardized Exams' or 'Alternative Credit' Search
Once your school loads, look for the search options. Depending on how your school configured their system, you'll see one of these:
"Standardized Exams" tab or filter
"Alternative Credit" toggle or section
Click on that option.
Now, type in the specific exam you're researching. For example:
"CLEP College Algebra"
"DSST Business Ethics"
"CLEP English Composition"
The system will display what credit your school awards for that exam, if any.

Step 4: Review the Results
When you find a match, you'll typically see:
Course equivalency – What course at your school this exam replaces
Credit hours – How many credits you'll receive (where accepted)*
Minimum score – What score you need to pass
*Credit acceptance varies by institution. Always verify with your school's registrar before testing.
If you see "elective credit" instead of a specific course, that means the exam counts toward your total degree credits but doesn't replace a required course. That's still valuable.
Step 5: If Your School Isn't Listed
Not every college uses CollegeSource TES or Transferology yet.
If you can't find your school, take this step:
Call or email your registrar's office and ask: "Does our school use CollegeSource TES to track Alternative Credit equivalencies for CLEP and DSST exams?"
If they say yes, ask them to check the system directly for you.
If they say no, ask for a copy of their alternative credit policy or testing credit guide. Most schools publish this on their registrar or test prep information page.
What Makes the 2026 CollegeSource Update Different?
Before 2026, finding alternative credit information in Transferology required digging through transfer articulation data or manually searching course-by-course.
The new "Alternative Credit" toggle consolidates everything into one searchable category. That includes:
CLEP exams
DSST exams
AP exams
IB exams
Other standardized testing programs
This update makes the CollegeSource CLEP search process significantly faster. You no longer have to sift through unrelated transfer credit data.
For students planning to take multiple exams, this is a huge time-saver.

How to Interpret What You Find
Here's how to read the information once you search for a Transferology CLEP equivalency or DSST result.
Direct Equivalency
If you see something like:
CLEP College Algebra = MATH 110 (3 credits)
That's a direct equivalency. The exam replaces that specific course at your school.
Elective Credit
If you see:
CLEP College Algebra = Lower-Division Elective (3 credits)
That means the exam doesn't replace a specific required course, but you still get 3 credits toward graduation. It's useful for reaching your total credit requirement faster.
No Match Found
If the search returns nothing, your school might not accept that specific exam. But don't give up yet.
Some schools accept exams but haven't uploaded their policies to Transferology. Call your registrar to double-check.
Why This Matters for Your Test Prep Strategy
Knowing how to check college credit transfer policies before you test is critical.
You don't want to spend weeks preparing for an exam only to discover your school doesn't accept it.

Additional Tips for Using Transferology
Here are a few extra tips to get the most out of your search.
Search multiple schools. If you're considering transferring or attending more than one institution, search each school separately. Credit policies vary widely.
Check for score requirements. Some schools require higher scores than others. A 50 might be enough at one school, while another requires a 55 or 60.
Look for updated dates. If the policy information looks outdated, contact your registrar to confirm it's still current.
Save your results. Take screenshots or write down what you find. You'll want this information when you register for exams and when you send your scores to your school.
